Vegan is not a Dirty Word at Harbinger Café in Charleston

At the Chef’s Potluck on April 29th at Middleton Place, we sampled lots of wonderful food, and one of the pleasant surprises was the baked sweets provided by Harbinger Cafe.  I’m sure I had heard of them before that day, but enjoying their vegan brownie made with tahini and their vanilla cake made sure that I would not forget them any time soon.

Every once in a while, my wife Therese would say, “when are we going to that vegan bakery on Upper King?”  And after a moment, I would say, “oh you mean Harbinger?”  And she would respond, “that doesn’t sound like the name I remember,” and I would conclude by saying, “yes, we should go there soon.”

Recently, “soon” finally became “now” as we were looking for somewhere for lunch and I was also feeling a decided lack of good sweets in our house.  Harbinger met both of those needs very well!

OK, so let’s be clear: some of the salads and/or sandwiches available might not be completely vegan.  You have to ask.  Therese had a corn salad and an appetizing-sounding sandwich, both of which had cheese on them.  I had the other sandwich, really a sort of hummus (but using a different kind of bean as I recall, not chickpeas), and some salad which was a little too spicy for me (other caution: ask about spiciness).

But I was really there for the sweets.  As in, when I walked inside my jaw nearly dropped at all the desserts.  Mostly bars and cookies, but a bunch of different kinds.  And some unexpected combos.  For example, on of the ones I bought was made with peanut butter, but had prunes over the top of it – this combo worked surprisingly well.  And the brownie I ordered had dates as one of the sweeteners which added to the creaminess factor.

I will be going back soon, if only to stock up on more unusual and surprisingly pleasing sweets.  Mmmm, I could go for one of them right now…
